CDL Driver (Must Have Heavy Haul/OD Experience)

Position Description:

The Commercial Driver is responsible for transporting propane tanks, heavy equipment and other goods by motor vehicle throughout the United States.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Other duties may be assigned.
  • Operates company-owned tractor-trailer to facilitate shipping operations.
  • Hook and unhook trailers from tractor, pushing, pulling and cranking lever to raise and lower landing gear on semi-trailers.
  • Performs long-haul transportation and shipping, sometimes through cities or spanning several states; drives long distances.
  • Applies knowledge of commercial driving skills in maneuvering tractor-trailer at varying speeds and difficult situations including heavy traffic, bad weather or tight loading docks; maneuvers trucks into loading and unloading positions.
  • Loads propane tanks and other goods onto trailer; ensures that cargo/freight is loaded and secured in a safe condition.
  • Inspects truck and trailer for mechanical issues and safe operating condition before and after each trip; reports any problems.
  • Maintains company truck in clean and safe condition; performs preventative maintenance; reports all maintenance needs to company headquarters.
  • Reports all breakdowns, accidents and delays to company headquarters.
  • Obtains customer’s signature for delivered goods.
  • Completes required paperwork, including logbook, fuel records and mileage records; maintains records required for compliance with federal and state transportation regulations.
  • Complies with Company safety standards and policies.
  • Complies with all traffic and driving laws, including federal transportation regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • DOT physical examination and medical card required.
  • Must possess a clean motor vehicle record and driver history report.
  • Must have 1 years of prior commercial driving experience.
  • Must have knowledge of federal and state Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Must be able to safely operate Company vehicles in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Department of Transportation requirements.
  • Must be able to read, write and perform basic math calculations.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proper loading and securing to prevent freight movement and ensure safe transport.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Required to sit and remain alert while driving for extended periods of time.
  • Required to shift manual transmission and operate foot pedals.
  • Required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, push items overhead, occasionally stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Required to talk, hear, and see.
  • Must be able to enter and exit truck cab several times per day, at a minimum height of 5 feet above ground level, with assistance of steps and handholds.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 75 lbs.
  • Must be able to hook/unhook various commercial vehicle combinations, manually raise and lower hood, manually raise and lower landing gear, operate the fifth wheel release lever, attach and release safety chains, open and close cargo doors, climb in and out of vehicles, fuel vehicles and check engine and coolant levels.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders.

Working Conditions:

  • This position spends 70% of on-duty time driving a tractor-trailer; and 30% of on-duty time outdoors.
  • Drivers are exposed to noise and vibration levels which may be higher than those experienced in passenger cars.
  • Will be exposed to various weather and traffic conditions.
